I wanted to write a post about the new animated short from Disney called Paperman.
In recent years, Disney have gone back to the ‘good old days’ by putting an animated short at the beginning of their new releases at the Cinema. They have been doing this for Pixar films for over a decade and now they are also doing it for their animated films. In the past few years, they have given us shorts such as: One Man Band, Presto, La Luna and now Paperman.
Paperman is a love story. Well, it is the beginnings of a love story. It tells of a young man and woman that meet on a platform, before getting on different trains. They share a moment and the man cannot stop thinking about her. When he gets to work, he spots her through his office window and spends most of the short trying to get her attention.
There are a few things I like about Paperman. Firstly, the Animation. I love how Disney have gone back to their traditional animation – which they were going to give up after Chicken Little in 2005. The animation here is simple, yet effective. The story is in black and white with the exception of the lipstick of the young woman. This makes the ‘kiss’ more powerful and adds more depth to this two dimensional world. The second thing I love is the sound. There is no speaking in this film, only music playing throughout and the sound effects of the world passing by – the train, rustling paper etc.. – but the lack of speech doesn’t hinder the film in anyway. The story flows along beautifully and you still have an ‘awwwww’ moment at the end. It makes me think of Wall.E. There was no speech in that until at least 45minutes in, but it didn’t matter. The quirkiness and depth of Wall.E’s character carried the film on it’s own.
I hope you enjoy Paperman as much as I did. The work of Walt Disney inspires me everyday in the things that I do and this new film does not disappoint. For me, it is up there with all the Disney Classics.
Happy Watching! : )
